Gary Hays
Practice Leader Organisation & People
Gary is a highly experienced international HR professional but also has extensive leadership, business, line management, strategy, R&D and supervisory board experience.
Gary worked at Shell for over 30 years in global HR roles, in addition to technology, project management and leadership roles. His international HR roles included Global HR VP in Shell Chemicals whilst Chemicals was divesting and reorganising globally. In his last role at Shell as VP Strategy & HR for the Shell shared service network, Gary combined both HR and business, growing the number of jobs from 1500 to 9000 in three years and leading 100 HR staff in 10 countries.
For the last 10+ years Gary has been European HR Director of New Zealand’s biggest company, Deputy VP HR & OD for one of Russia’s largest oil & gas companies and worked in Kazakhstan as Head of the Sovereign Wealth Fund’s Corporate University, whose clients included all of the major national companies.
He has also had long-term consulting roles, especially in the areas of talent development and organisational change, for among others the European Space Agency, Russia’s largest and one of the Middle East’s largest chemicals companies.
Gary has frequently demonstrated that he can move between strategic, tactical and hands-on with ease.
He is the author of the book ‘People Matters, People Matter: Personal experience, observations & tools for the Management of Talent and Change’ (2020).
